Industrial-Scale 3D Printing for Breast Tissue Regeneration

With the capabilities of health-related 3D printing continuing to swell, one especially exciting new partnership is looking to bring about an industrial-scale solution for regenerative breast implants – using bioprinting technology.
The venture sees pioneering medical company CollPlant join forces with 3D printing manufacturer, Stratasys to further develop its bioprinting technologies, with the ultimate aim to mass produce regenerative breast implants for both reconstructive and aesthetic procedures.
The move follows CollPlant’s announcement in early 2023 that it had successfully completed a large-animal study for its 3D bioprinted regenerative breast implants. Findings had shown progressive stages of tissue regeneration, the company said, and no adverse effects were reported.
For patients, it is hoped the technology will herald a new solution to the synthetic silicone breast implantations commonly used in breast reconstruction or augmentation procedures, which are prone to complications.
“…the combined, pioneering technologies of both companies will streamline the development and production process so that we have the most efficient means to produce our regenerative breast implants and other potential tissues and organs,” said CollPlant Chief Executive Officer, Yehiel Tal in a press statement.
“We believe that our rhCollagen-based regenerative implant has the potential to overcome the challenges of existing breast procedures that use silicone implants or autologous fat tissue transfer.”
