Creatively Solving Challenges Faced by Orthopaedic Teams

Dr Chris Jeffery, Australian founder and CEO of Field Orthopaedics and Dr Greg Couzens, a world-renowned hand surgeon recently showcased their Field Micro Screw System in the United States and Europe for the first time since it received 501(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in July 2018 and began manufacture.

In 2018, the Field Micro Screw System won Product Design Gold at the 2018 Australian Good Design Awards® for its ergonomic design and ground-breaking storage, safety and sterilization capabilities. Created by the Field Orthopaedics team to address complications in managing orthopaedic injuries e.g. fractures of the hand and wrist, this new system is now in high demand.

The Field Micro Screw System features a range of 1.5 mm and 2.0 mm diameter cannulated compression screws ranging in length from 6 mm to 16 mm in 1 mm increments, 0.6 mm single trocar K-wires of 70 mm length plus a specifically designed instrument kit, tailored to the insertion of the 1.5 and 2.0 FO Micro Screw.

Dr Jeffery says the system is “the first of several projects his company will undertake to respond to under-serviced markets and positively impact post-surgery patient care and outcomes. Operating since 2015, Field Orthopaedics’ unique, collaborative business model is based on immersion of the medical and engineering disciplines with world-renowned surgeons, approach that moves away from a silo-based approach to product development.”

He added he has “overhauled the traditionally expensive, time-consuming and complicated task of medical device development to build a culture and platform that gives surgeons access to experienced design and engineering teams to turn problems they face every day into solutions.”
