Colourful Thinking: BCI-Generated Art

While a creative mind is central to all artists’ work, a new art exhibition in the United States is pushing the boundaries of just what that can mean.
Hosted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (ASAS) in Washington DC, “The BCI Exhibit” is touted as the world’s first thought-powered art exhibition, all powered by brain-computer interfaces (BCIs).
Blackrock Neurotech Co-Founder and CEO, Marcus Gerhardt said the artworks – created by several people with paralysis known as “BCI Pioneers” who have received a Blackrock implant – helped combat the idea that neurotechnology was relegated to the pages of science fiction.
“There’s a common misperception that all BCI technology is rudimentary or in its earliest stages, but as the exhibit demonstrates, BCI Pioneers have used Blackrock technology to execute incredibly sophisticated tasks, like operation of complex [design] programs, for years,” said Gerhardt in a press statement.
Having undertaken studies on its BCI technology for almost two decades, Blackrock anticipates that its first BCI device for home use will be released next year.
“The BCI Exhibit” runs at ASAS until 15 November 2023. Read more here.
