The Human Brain Atlas

Not only does Science’s “Human Brain Atlas” help to build a better picture of typical neural function, it provides a basis for further research into the cause and pathology of brain diseases.

First published in 2019, the poster visually illustrates the genome-wide ribonucleic acid (RNA) profiles of all protein-coding genes found in human, pig and mouse brains.

It also features data collected for certain protein targets in the brains of humans and mice.

“[The Atlas] is adding a wealth of knowledge about where RNAs and proteins are expressed across all regions of the brain and, incredibly, at a single-cell level,” said Science’s Senior Editor, Dr Sean Sanders.

“With this information, scientists can gain insights into the inner workings of individual cells, in addition to data on interactions between different brain cells.”
