In what has been touted as a world first, Australian startup, BrainConnect has developed under-the-skin brain sensing technology capable of sensing high frequency oscillations and typical brain waves and rhythms – a potentially transformative innovation for identifying neurological issues.
BrainConnect’s implantable AURA technology aims to reduce the invasiveness of traditional brain-computer interface devices, providing long-term, continuous brain activity monitoring.
“Our technology is distinguished by our patented design and electrode arrangement specifically tailored for subcutaneous and long-term continuous sensing,” BrainConnect Director and Founder, Associate Professor Omid Kavehei told Neo-Bionica in a recent case study.
“We currently achieve almost four-times the sampling rate of our competitors for the same number of channels and are able to adaptatively increase the number of channels as we reduce the sampling rate.
“…our technology has significant advantages by enabling access to extremely long term and continuous bran data with sensory fusion, alongside other devices such as heart rate variability monitoring or daily activity logs which can provide a very personalised insight and a general overview across many patient recordings.”
Associate Professor Kavehei, who also works within the Faculty of Engineering at The University of Sydney, said BrainConnect anticipated the device would enter its preclinical trials phase in the near future.
