Two big players in healthcare have teamed up in a new venture to help fast-track the use and scale of artificial intelligence (AI) for surgeries.

Johnson & Johnson (J&J) MedTech and NVIDIA jointly signed a memorandum of understanding last month, which will see NVIDIA’s existing healthcare AI integrate with surgical technologies from J&J MedTech.

The partnership will work to drive greater access to real-time analysis and AI algorithms to help inform surgical decision-making, education and collaboration, J&J MedTech said in a statement           .

“One of the major challenges in scaling AI for surgery is the closed design of surgical technologies,” said J&J Global Head of MedTech Digital, Shan Jegatheeswaran.

“Bringing advanced edge computing hardware and software to the OR [operating room] enables scalability of innovation and new AI-powered solutions for clinical decision-making, education and training, and collaboration – with the ultimate goal of advancing patient care.”
