New Research: Role of Gamma Oscillations for Stroke Recovery

New research led by a past Bionics Queensland Challenge award winner has shown how gamma oscillations in the brain may play a role in stroke recovery.

Published in Neural Regeneration Research, a perspective article from Montana Samantzis and colleagues at the Queensland Brain Institute covers their recent findings into gamma oscillations – brainwaves within a specific high frequency – and their role in orchestrating a patient’s balance and communication following a stroke.

In 2022, Montana received a Bionics Queensland-Clem Jones Young Inspiring Neuroscientist Award for her work on an individualised non-invasive brain stimulation treatment for stroke recovery. Her project combined brain imaging and stimulation techniques with a personalised closed-loop algorithm to deliver individualised treatment protocols.
