Elon Musk’s ambitious plans to build the world’s most advanced brain-computer interface (BCI) device are a step closer to fruition, with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) greenlighting human trials for his implantable Neuralink technology.

“We are excited to share that we have received the FDA’s approval to launch our first-in-human clinical study,” said Neuralink in a Twitter post on 26 May 2023.

“This is the result of incredible work by the Neuralink team in close collaboration with the FDA and represents an important first step that will one day allow our technology to help many people. Recruitment is not yet open for our clinical trial. We’ll announce more information on this soon!”

The announcement comes more than two years after Musk stated his company was working with the FDA to get clearance to commence human trials.
