Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm-based technology helping patients with abnormal heart rhythm has taken out the coveted “Best New Monitoring Solution” at this year’s MedTech Breakthrough Awards.

Medtronic’s AccuRhythm™ AI algorithm works with its LINQ II insertable cardiac monitor (ICM) to deliver more accurate data relating to irregular heart rhythm events, enabling better treatment for patients needing long-term cardiac monitoring or management.

“We are thrilled to win the MedTech Breakthrough Award for a technology that makes such a profound impact on patients and helps clinicians focus on cardiac events that are most relevant,” said Medtronic’s Stacey Churchwell in a press statement.

The technology, which won the prize amongst a field of almost 4,000 applications, was introduced to patients and clinicians in Australia, New Zealand, the United States and select European countries last year.

Medtronic also confirmed approval from the United States’ Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to apply the AI technology via cloud-based updates to the predecessor of its LINQ II LCM, known as the Reveal LINQ™.

“Adding AccuRhythm AI to the thousands of Reveal LINQ ICMs currently implanted in patients globally is important as it will help reduce the data burden on many hospitals and clinics that still regularly use this device for monitoring their patients,” said Medtronic’s Dr Alan Cheng.
