Local Progress for Migraine Neuromodulation Device

Enrolment of an Australian pilot study for US medtech ShiraTronics’ minimally invasive implantable migraine therapy has now ended, as it gets set to start a pivotal clinical study later this year.

Developed to provide relief from the often-debilitating symptoms faced by chronic migraine sufferers, the fully implantable neuromodulation system delivers targeted electrical pulses to disrupt the brain’s pain signals caused by migraine.

The Minnesota-based company said the device is the first-ever fully implantable, minimally invasive system used for this purpose, with promising early outcomes showing a significant drop in both headache and migraine days, together with reduced headache duration and severity.

Having won breakthrough device designation from the US Food and Drug Administration in 2021, the first six implants of the device were completed as part of a pilot study in Australia last December.

Further studies are set to take place in both Australia and the US in the coming year.
