A medical device company based in Melbourne is well underway in developing the next generation of brain monitoring technology.
The Minder system from Epi-Minder is an implantable electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring system, used to detect epileptic seizures.
Inspiring the innovation from Australian neurologist, Professor Mark Cook AO was his own father’s struggle with epilepsy.
Designed for long term and continuous EEG measurements, the pioneering Minder system provides insights into brain activity to help with clinical diagnosis and management of epilepsy, a condition affecting around 50 million people worldwide.
A small implant is placed under a person’s scalp, with a multi-channel electrode lead running across the skull for full brain coverage and automatic seizure detection software powered by artificial intelligence.
The system received Breakthrough Device Designation from the US Food and Drug Administration in April, and is currently under clinical evaluation across sites in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney.
“Epi-Minder was founded on the belief that long term, continuous EEG monitoring of epilepsy will be transformational in the management of epilepsy,” said Epi-Minder CEO, Rohan Hoare in a statement earlier this year.
“We continue our efforts to bring this technology to market as soon as possible to improve the lives of those living with epilepsy.”
