Two companies are joining forces to develop the first implanted, whole-brain neural interface, powered by pioneering “ultrasound-on-chip” technology.
The five-year agreement sees Butterfly Network – a digital health company which develops portable, semiconductor-based ultrasound technology and intuitive software – partner with Forest Neurotech, a deep tech research company working towards a minimally-invasive device for imaging and ultrasound-driven neural stimulation.
Included in the agreement is more than $30 million ($US20 million) to be paid to Butterfly Network for annual licensing, chip purchases, services and milestone payments, with further revenue expected for each unit sold once the product goes to market.
“We are thrilled to embark on this journey with Butterfly Network, whose unique Ultrasound-on-Chip™ technology is key to enabling our novel approach to minimally invasive brain imaging and stimulation.” said Forest Neurotech Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, Will Biederman in a statement.
“Our shared passion for innovation and semiconductor-enabled healthcare technologies makes Butterfly the perfect match to enable our vision of developing the world’s first implanted, whole-brain neural interface.”
The announcement comes only months after Butterfly Network launched its “Butterfly Garden”, a marketplace platform for companies working in medtech, artificial intelligence and software to utilise Butterfly Network’s imaging technology in new ways.
