With one in seven people thought to be affected by migraine around the world, this ground-breaking therapy innovation will be exciting for many.
Dutch medtech company, Salvia BioElectronics this month announced its successful first implantation of bioelectronic foils into the brain to treat severe migraine and cluster headaches – heralding what the company called “a new era of possibilities” for the field.
The 29-year-old patient who received the neuromodulation device – an Australian mother of two – reported immediate improvements in the number and intensity of migraines and cluster headaches experienced following implantation.
Salvia’s Chief Medical Officer, Wim Pollet explained the device worked by restoring “balance in the brain”.
“Migraines and cluster headaches are characterized by hypersensitivity of the nervous system,” said Pollet in a statement.
“Our solution aims to restore the balance of the nervous system by delivering gentle electrical pulses via paper-thin bioelectronic foil to reduce migraine and cluster headache attacks.”
The novel device was granted breakthrough device status from the United States’ Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2020, based on its impact on an unmet medical need.
