In an extraordinary step forward for patients with severe skin damage, researchers have developed bionic artificial skin with a fully-implantable wireless tactile sensory system, shown to effectively heal wounds and restore damaged skin function.
Published this month in Nature Communications, a team from Yonsei University in Korea have developed a complex system incorporating a range of features including the extracellular matrix-based artificial skin, pressure sensor, wireless powered pressure-frequency modulation circuit and neural interface electrodes.
Having proved a huge hurdle in past research, the technology’s ability to restore tactile function is a major advancement and allows for more stable operability and biocompatibility for effective long-term nerve stimulation.
