Obstructive sleep apnoea is a serious breathing disorder affecting millions of people worldwide, and when left untreated can lead to significant issues for health and quality of life.

Now, a new study brings fresh hope for neuromodulation as a viable treatment option for the often-debilitating condition.

London-based medtech, LivaNova this month reported positive predictive outcomes from its OSPREY study of the aura6000 Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulator System for treating moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea, and will conclude participant enrolment earlier than anticipated.

“A planned interim analysis, per the approved protocol, was conducted for the first 90 patients enrolled in OSPREY,” said the study’s Principal Investigator, Dr Atul Malhotra in a statement.

“We are now able to estimate a high chance of success for achieving the primary endpoint in this unique randomized controlled trial without further patient enrolment.

“While this milestone shows we are on a positive trajectory, long-term follow-up visits will continue for each patient through the primary endpoint and beyond.”

The implanted device delivers mild stimulation to the hypoglossal nerve in the neck during sleep, acting like a “pacemaker for the tongue” to help keep the airway open overnight.
