Technology that Serves our Senses

“Researchers are striving to develop devices that help to alleviate injuries affecting the human senses and to overcome natural limitations of the human senses,” writes science journalist, Ventana al Conocimiento for OpenMind BBVA.

Examples range from bionic ears and hearing aids that synchronise with other electronic devices, to bionic vision and artificial noses. A wide array of tools now exists to improve our hearing ability even in a noisy environment and many of these devices and others interface with the wearers’ world of technology.

Today, sensory bionic devices also “take advantage of artificial intelligence so that people without vision are able to “see” what is around them… a smart camera mounted on special glasses allows the user to read texts or identify faces,” writes al Conocimiento.

“With the help of a small headset, the technology processes the information captured by the camera and converts it into audio, which is transmitted to the ears of the visually impaired person.”

Sensory breakthroughs have also come in the form of artificial skin, artificial noses and movable tongue prostheses that give back a sense of taste and the ability to speak.
