The United States’ Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted clearance to an AI-powered remote monitoring app for Parkinson’s disease.

The brainchild of NeuroRPM, the wearable device works by monitoring a range of neurological symptoms related to Parkinson’s disease on a day-to-day basis, via AI and smartwatches.

Dr Alexander Ksendzovsky, NeuroRPM Co-founder and Director of Functional Neurosurgery at the University of Maryland, said reaching the milestone of FDA clearance was a huge step forward in the fight against Parkinson’s disease.

“This technology will allow for unprecedented insights into the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease including bradykinesia, tremor, and dyskinesia, using critical health and wellness data from Apple Watch,” said Dr Ksendzovsky in a press statement.

“NeuroRPM is able to assess even slight changes with accuracy comparable to that of a neurologist. This changes the game for the treatment of Parkinson’s patients.”
